Lesson 11: Wrap Up

After seeing SO much time wasted by so many at work and elsewhere and after hearing how mobile devices are making people more reactors rather than thinkers, I still do not plan to do much more than use WiFi with my Kindle.

My favorite discovery was Snipits!

  • Did you connect with others doing the 11.5 Cosas? No.

  • Were there any take-aways or unexpected outcomes from this program that surprised you? No.

  • What could we do differently to improve upon this program’s format or content? I can't think of anything.

  • Describe your learning experience in one word or in one sentence. We may use your words to promote 11.5 Cosas learning activities to others. Rewarding.
  • Lesson 10 Challenge

The Code for America project in San Antonio is quite exciting! When I wanted to check the Community Sourcebook of Zip Code Demographics, I got a "No such record" message. I was surprised to see a link for 2013 early voting locations.

When I checked the U. S. Census American Fact Finder for my home zip code, I was surprised to learn that only 12.8% of the population was a spouse in the household and 32% of the population were children in the household. Using the list of highest paid government salaries in Texas, I was surprised to see that the UT Austin special assistant gets paid more than either head coach! All three salaries were rather phenomenal.

Mobile technology could increase government access and services. Especially in emergencies people might initiate contact while they are thinking of an issue rather than waiting until later and possibly forgetting to pursue a matter.

Since not all citizens have mobile technology, I'm not sure having government services and elected officials "on the go" will dramatically affect our democracy.

    Lesson 9 Part 1 OneClickdigital

    3 most popular eAudio titles:
Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Eggs, and Nauti Temptress.

eBook mobile apps available: Google Play, iTunes, Kindle Fire
e-Audio mobile apps available: Google Play, iTunes, Nook.

If a Kindle Fire app user has problems with the app, they can uninstall the app and install the updated Kindle Fire app from the Amazon Store.

    Lesson 8 Part 2 Challenge

One Click Digital eAudiobooks initially had appealing recommendations with cover shots for an unrefined search. I was impressed with the advanced search options. It did not have Martin's Big Words.

Then I tried Overdrive's advanced search and was wowed by a much more extensive list of subjects, more refined interest level choices and ATOS/Lexile/reading level choices! My search for a juvenile non-fiction eAudiobook for lower grades found Martin's Big Words and two hits total. This was more than One Click Digital.

    Overdrive was easier to search.

    Lesson 6 Part 2 Challenge

When people post something on social media, they can do it while alone and without thinking of the MANY who will see the post. Some people have learned to wait a while before sending an email--so they can refine the message or cancel it completely. Social media seems to usually thrive on instant messages and pauses to reflect or just think a little would place a damper on impulsive behavior.

    Lesson 6 Part 1 Challenge

The history was amazing--wonderfully compact and apparently comprehensive!

When my longtime friend Kevin was stationed in Iraq and later in Afghanistan, it was great that he could easily stay in touch with all in his "fan club" via Facebook. Some friends and their newly adopted daughter recently moved to Iowa and it's great that they also can use Facebook to regularly report on their adjustment to Iowa and on their three-year-old's recent accomplishments.

I have decided to forego ownership of a smart phone and so I have not attempted some newer forms of social media.

    Lesson 5 challenge

I enjoyed the challenges and finally got 100 on one. In reality it's probably not worth much time or effort to think about the four levels of word usefulness in a search. Although I have my own sense of useful wordings, Google can generally "handle" whatever is thrown at it.

    Lesson 3 Part 2 Challenge

    Public guides:
The LibGuides for Seniors and found an assortment of useful information, including classes for seniors. I did suggest to the guide's author that she add to her guide the Elvira Cisneros Center, THE primary senior center on the southside.

The Hobbies and Crafts guide included gardening, for those looking for hobby suggestions.

The Library guide included info on new SAPL locations and opportunities to help name a new location.

    Staff guides:
The Circulation guide has wonderful info from creating customer carts to payment plans and replacement items. I suggest this guide to all new staff.

The Marketing guide has the SAPL logo, which is useful for inhouse event signage. It also has closure and some other useful signage, like Out of Order. Major Event Checklists are also provided.

    Lesson 3 Part 1 Challenge

A customer said she was nearing retirement and wanted information. For "nearing retirement"Academic Search Complete found several articles on investments, expectations in retirement and easing into retirement via part time work. Legal Forms found a Retirement Cash Flow form to start planning finances for retirement. The Job and Career Accelerator of Learning Express offered ways to explore new lines of work in retirement.
